Audi is readying a race version of its mid-engined R8 supercar for the Essen Motor Show.
The specially-prepared R8 will have “over 500 horsepower,” according to the German automaker. Testing for the model piloted by longtime Audi driver Frank Biela began in August. The stock Audi R8 4.2 FSI produces 420 hp from a 4.2L V-8.
“Ever since the Audi R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with inquiries about a race version,” said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport.
At the German auto show, Audi will also announce its plans for the 2009 motorsport season. Complementing the new R8 race version will be this year’s winning Le Mans car as well as Timo Scheider’s DTM car.
