Emotions and frustrations were running high for all 70 laps of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday afternoon. The 2007 Canadian Grand Prix will stay in the minds of all who saw it for many reasons, and for the ING Renault F1 Team, it was a story of mixed fortunes: practice sessions full of incident, but plenty of reasons to be optimistic as we left Canada.
Heikki started from last place, but drove a competitive, error-free race to finish just shy of the podium. His fourth place finish equaled the team’s best of the season, was the best of his career – and brought five more points to the championship total. Giancarlo was in the fight for the podium in the improved R27, after an aggressive start to the race. But all the effort was for naught after he was disqualified for running a red light in the pit-lane.
No rest for the wicked!
The team has barely caught its breath after the Canadian GP, but they are already hard at work in Indianapolis, for the next round of this dramatic F1 season. Back at the factories, the teams are hard at work: at Viry, they are grafting to ensure that Heikki’s engine failure remains an exception to the rule; and at Enstone, the grey matter is being pushed to the limit as they try and regain lost ground in terms of performance.
On a low-grip circuit where top speed is critical, the R27 will need to be on the top of its game for every one of the 73 laps on Sunday. ING Renault F1 Team sits fourth in the constructors’ championship, and wants to make an impact stateside before returning to Europe – and its home race in Magny-Cours.
