Hyundai Motor Company Will Produce Hybrid Car
Apr 11, 2008
As global fuel prices skyrocket amid rising oil prices, and as the green agenda gains gravitas, car manufacturers are racing to produce vehicles that churn out less harmful emissions, while also using less petrol.
The newest company announcing its intention to go green is Korean producer Hyundai Motor Company.
Hyundai chairperson Chung Mong Koo has told South Korean president Lee Myung Bak that the automotive company will start mass production of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) from next year.
“Therefore, technology for advanced cars, like the hybrid, is imperative. We also plan to produce a small fleet of fuel-cell electric vehicles from 2012.”
Hyundai will begin mass production with the Elantra LPI (liquefied petroleum injection) hybrid, a car that uses both electricity and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
In 2010, Hyundai plans to introduce midsized hybrids that use petrol and LPG.
Currently, Hyundai provides Accent hybrid models to South Korean government agencies as part of a pilot project.
The plan is to expand the line-up to midsized sedans – and beyond – for mass production starting from 2009.
