Question: You won 10 Cup races at Darlington. What was it like to win for the first time here?
David Pearson: It tickled me to death. Everyone talked about how hard it is to win here at the The Lady in Black. I thought if anyone is going to tame this place, I would give it a try. I felt like I did a pretty good job at it.
Question: What was your favorite NASCAR memory?
DP: People ask me that all the time and I would have to say the first race I won, the World 600 (1961). I never will forget that because I was a rookie and Ray Fox came to Charlotte without a driver and they gave me a chance at it. I had just raced short tracks and never ran that fast in my life. I really enjoyed it and luckily I won the race.
Question: What are your thoughts on the state of NASCAR today?
DP: (Laughs). I’m really not the one to be asking about that. I really don’t like nothing that they are doing. I don’t like the way they do it. You can’t say nothing. You can’t touch nobody or they will fine you for it. I really don’t like the rules and really don’t care much about it right now. I know a lot of people like it and I watch the race and see what’s going on … but I just don’t like anything they are doing.
Question: If you have one race to win, what driver past or present would you have do it?
DP: I would pick myself. I have heard so many people say that so-and-so is the best driver out there. If you run in a race car and you don’t feel like you are better than the next guy. He is going to beat you.
