On Friday at Talladega Superspeedway, the Navy and Earnhardt announced the recruiting plan: 88 potential sailors will go through boot camp together under the banner of the Dale Jr. Division.
The Navy sponsors the No. 88 Chevrolet fielded by Earnhardt’s JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Earnhardt’s unit will ship to Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill., and he’ll commission the division for the Navy there. Earnhardt will visit the recruits again when they complete the seven- to eight-week course. Also, Brian Keselowski, who drives Earnhardt’s Nationwide car, will join the recruits during boot camp to learn some of the basics of military service.
“This is the first time we’ve developed a national-level recruiting program, focused on the synergy of the Navy and a high-performing, non-military partner, “ said Capt. Jack Hanzlik, public affairs officer for the chief of naval personnel. He added he thought using NASCAR’s most popular driver in a recruiting campaign would make the 88-sailor allotment “a pretty quick fill. “
To launch the recruiting effort, Earnhardt will drive the No. 83 Dale Jr. Division Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series Carquest Auto Parts 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 24, the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.
