Mr Rowe is the longest- serving member of the Waikato branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (since it was founded in 1958), which this weekend held its North Island Easter Rally at the Te Rapa Racecourse to help commemorate its 50th anniversary.

Mr Rowe had three vehicles at this weekend’s rally, and said his passion for vintage cars had taken him across New Zealand and the world, visiting old car clubs and museums.

He entered one of the three cars, a Ford V8 60s Special, in vintage car club hill-climbs, a pastime which he said was enough to knock several years off his life in a good way.

“It’s very exhilarating it takes about 14 years off my life, it makes me feel a lot younger.”

Christine Davis, one of the rally’s marshalls, said 92 vehicles were registered for the rally from across the North Island.

The rally on Saturday took drivers and their cars on a trip of up to 210km, including Raglan, Te Kowhai, Whatawhata, Te Akau, Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Hamilton.
