Jun 04, 2007
Marin County’s Peter Stoneberg captured the top spot on Saturday during qualifying at Infineon Raceway for the 21st annual Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races.
Stoneberg, a resident of Belvedere, piloted his 1963 Lotus to victory in the seven-lap qualifying race for Group 6 (1961-1965 Sports Racing Cars) over the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. El Segundo’s John Morton was second (1964 Lotus) with Oklahoma City’s John Harden third (1963 Huffaker).
Stoneberg, who has never won at the Wine Country Classic, led the qualifying race wire-to-wire in his Lotus. He placed second in last year’s main event behind Simi Valley’s Terry Miller. Stoneberg also placed second in 2004 driving a 1968 McLaren.
“This event is a big one, and I’d definitely like to win it. It’s really one of the crown jewels of vintage racing, ” said Stoneberg. “It’s fun to have lots of friends and family here cheering for me in the stands. ”
More than 250 competitors attempted to qualify on Saturday in nine different racing groups, with Sunnyvale’s John Buddenbaum taking the pole position in Group 4 (1956-1962 Production Cars). Other California-based top qualifiers included Markleeville’s Leonard Turnbeau in Group 4 (1956-1962 Production Cars); Simi Valley’s Terry Miller in Group 5 (1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am); and Petaluma’s Randall Smith in Group 8 (1967-1980 IMSA and FIA Sports Racing Cars).
