Merger mania grips NASCAR: Who is next?
By Doug Guthrie
Jul 27, 2007
It takes a lot of money and equipment to run with the leaders in any form of motor sports. The new essential, a seven post shaker rig (a suspension dyno), costs up to $2.5 million. Getting to NASCAR’s limit of four teams in one organization also is now believed to be the only way to get enough test time, shared data and combined sponsorship resources to win.
It is interesting that this sudden pool-our-resources-or-die movement is playing out just as NASCAR phases in the Car of Tomorrow that was supposed to save teams all kinds of cash. Truth is, the way it’s been done, forcing all teams to maintain both the old car and new car this year has drained everyone.
