Rea tyre gamble pays off

Jonathan Rea put his first victory in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, in front of his home supporters at Mondello Park, down to a gamble on tyre selection.
The HM Plant Honda rider had finished the opening race at the County Kildare circuit in fourth place, with Leon Haslam powering his Airwaves Ducati to a first win of the season, prompting the Michelin tyre technician to recommend that he should use a different type for the second race.
“It was one that we had not used before, but he just said to me, ‘trust me, go with it’,” explained Rea, who then used the tyre to good effect to hold off the challenge of Shane Byrne, the former champion, aboard the Stobart Honda.
