The former F1 champion was looking for a strong finish to the season and got things off on the right foot, qualifying third on the starting grid.
Villeneuve managed to lead a lap for the first time in his NASCAR career before losing control of his Toyota Tundra on lap 80 and slamming into the wall. The damage was too much to be repaired, leaving him 36th and last in the final results. He was the only driver in the race who failed to finish.
In seven Truck starts this fall, Villeneuve’s best finish was 14th in Atlanta. He managed three top-10 starts but ended up crashing out of three events.
Villeneuve will now begin preparations to race in the Sprint Cup series with Bill Davis Racing, starting with the Daytona 500 next February. TSN.ca
He led the race for the first time on lap 60, getting his first ever bonus points for leading a race in NASCAR. He stayed ahead for seven laps battling up front with Kyle Busch, and then led once more on lap 76 before pitting under caution.
However, shortly after the restart he got loose going into Turn 1; his truck went sideways and he made contact with Jon Wood who was running very close to him on the outside. He then went into the wall backwards, finishing the race on the spot.
“I just lost the rear end, I’m not sure what happened,” Villeneuve said about the incident. “The truck was a little bit loose on new tyres. We just wanted to tough it out for 10 laps and then it got great. Blogger
