Travis Kvapil fought off all challengers down the stretch and captured Saturday night’s Smith’s Las Vegas 350 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The No.6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford driver crossed the finish line about eight lengths ahead of Johnny Benson.
The victory was Kvapil’s fourth of the season and ninth of his truck career. KansasCity
Kvapil pulled away from Johnny Benson and Jon Wood at the end to match Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday for the series lead with his fourth victory of the year.
“It was sort of an amazing finish,” Kvapil said. “Those last handful of laps I was running wide open on the outside of turns one and two, but the 23 (Benson) could run wide open on the bottom. It just made for some great racing.
“The 21 (Wood) got loose once under me and I heard him pedal the gas, doing everything he could to not wreck us but still go for the victory. Those guys did an amazing job, and we ran a great race for everybody.” USAToday
Locked in a three-way battle with Benson and Jon Wood, Kvapil, who had started on the pole, took control with three laps to go, gradually pulling away for his fourth win of the 2007 season.
Wood finished third, while Terry Cook and Erik Darnell completed the top five.
With a 13th-place finish, Mike Skinner reclaimed the points lead over Ron Hornaday with six races left in the 2007 season. Hornaday blew a tire on lap 134 and finished 22nd. TOM ZULEWSKI, TheSpectrum
