Melbourne has traditionally hosted the opening race in recent years except for 2006 when Bahrain kicked off the season due to the original race dates clashing with the Commonwealth Games.
“Until such time as the official 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is announced any speculation about the date of next year’s Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix has to be discounted. Only when the official calendar is released will the Bahrain International Circuit be in a position to announce the date for the race in 2008,” said BIC general manager Martin Whitaker.

The Australian Grand Prix has lost its place as the first race of the Formula One season. The decision though, has allowed the popular V8 Supercars to return to Albert Park next year.
The 2008 race will be staged from March 13 to 16.
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has resisted pressure for a night race - but has compromised with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone by agreeing to start the race at 3.30pm.

The 2008 Formula One season will start with the Bahrain Grand Prix, rather than the traditional opening race in Australia, it has been announced.
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) said the Melbourne race would also start 90 minutes later than usual to cater for European TV viewers.
“This is the best option for our event and the people who support it,” said AGPC chairman Ron Walker. The changes are subject to approval by motorsport’s governing body the FIA.

The United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will not be on the 2008 Formula One schedule after eight consecutive annual events since 2000.
After recent meetings, Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George and Formula One Management Ltd. CEO Bernie Ecclestone mutually agreed to not schedule Formula One racing in 2008 at Indianapolis.
