Sebastian Vettel has been given a 10-place penalty on the grid in China for crashing into Mark Webber when they were running behind the Safety Car. At the time the two were running second and third. grandPrix. xom
Both Webber and Vettel had produced two of the outstanding performances of the soaked race at Fuji and were running in second and third respectively when the safety car came out following Fernando Alonso’s huge smash.
But both were out on the spot after Vettel lost concentration in the queue and hit the back of the sister Red Bull car, causing substantial damage to both. ITV.com
An irate Webber, 31, swore live on British television after the incident, but rookie Vettel - later caught on camera crying in the pits - took the blame for “ruining” his race while circulating behind the safety car.
20-year-old Vettel, branded a “kid” by Webber despite qualifying and racing competitively at Fuji Speedway until the crash, said he took his eyes off the action when he noticed Lewis Hamilton heating his brakes.
“By the time I looked forward again, I was already in the back of Mark’s car and I think he had also reacted to Lewis, “ the German said.
“I apologise now to Mark because I ruined both our races. “ HomeofSport
Webber was visibly furious as he got out of the car and vented his anger on TV reporters upon his return to the pits. The Australian felt he could have vied with Hamilton for victory had it not been for Vettel’s indiscretion.
“That was a completely disastrous finish,” he said. “We were in very, very good shape to challenge Lewis for first today. We were strong and I didn’t make any mistakes despite the tricky conditions, cars were aquaplaning and the visibility was very poor. Fernando’s crash caused the second safety car stint, which bunched everyone back up again. Formula1.com
