The F1 team, which was sold to Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya and Dutch businessman Michiel Mol earlier this month, is once again set to change its name.
Since 2005 the outfit has had three names. It started as Jordan but that was changed to Midland when the team was sold. Midland, however, didn’t last very long as the team was bought by and named Spyker at the start of this year’s Championship. Planet-F1.co
Asia provided some of Formula One’s highlights in 2007, with memorable races in China and Japan, and the region will be even more in the thick of the action next season.
The first floodlit night race in Singapore, as well as the first Indian team in tycoon Vijay Mallya’s takeover of Spyker, will add to surging interest in an area of increasing importance to the sport.
“Somebody once told me in America that Asians are slow starters, but once they get up to speed they go past pretty quick, ” Mallya told Reuters at Sunday’s season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. Alan Baldwin, China Post.com
The team have undergone their third name change since 2005, when Silverstone-based Jordan was sold to Midland F1, which then became Spyker Cars when the Dutch sports car manufacturer paid £51m a season later.
Mallya is chairman and controlling shareholder of the UB Group, which has beer, spirits and airline operations in India.
And the ambitious businessman claims to have plenty of interest from potential Indian sponsors, although he said an Indian driver for the team was not an immediate priority.
