News of the World just reported that two-time world driving champion Fernando Alonso is leaving McLaren-Mercedes next year. While that was considered a sure thing in the wake of Stepneygate and all, the real shocker is that he isn’t headed to Renault to be reunited with Flavio Briatore as expected. Instead, they have him going to Ferrari of all places. The report says that a cool $40 million was the price to secure Alonso for the scuderia. As they point out, it should be a relatively easy transition for Fernando, who has already been *ahem* studying design features of the Ferrari all season. Frank Filipponio, AutoBlog.com
Alonso’s position at McLaren has become more untenable with the FIA’s confirmation that it was the Spaniard’s emails that resulted in the team being stripped of their 2007 Constructors’ Championship points and handed a £50m fine.
And with Ron Dennis admitting that his relationship with his driver is “extremely cold” and that Alonso’s unhappy with the team’s equality policy, the double World Champion’s time at McLaren appears to be running out - and fast.
In fact, according to the News of the World, Alonso has just three more races as a McLaren driver having already agreed to join Ferrari. Planet-F1.com
Fernando Alonso in Indianapolis shunned speculation that his next destination in pitlane will be Ferrari.
The Italian sports newspapers La Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere dello Sport reported in unison that the reigning world champion does not intend to put up with the current atmosphere at McLaren and is already making eyes at F1’s Maranello based team.
Alonso, who “sees red”, according to La Gazzetta, has a multi-year McLaren contract until minimally 2008. Formula-1.UpdateSport.com
