Chery Automobile, China’s largest homegrown carmaker, has debuted a new plug-in hybrid model that it says can run up to 94 miles on a single charge.
The S18, with a top speed of 75mph, can be fully charged at a home electrical outlet within four to six hours, Chery said in a statement posted on its website.
“Our electric vehicle uses the world’s latest technology, highly efficient energy conservation and is easy to use,” Yuan Tao, the company’s deputy general manager, said at a ceremony held earlier this week at Chery’s headquarters in eastern China’s Anhui province.
Chery uses iron-phosphate-based lithium-ion batteries for S18, which can be fully charged in four to six hours and 80% charged in half an hour, it said.
The firm did not say when it would start mass production of the model or whether it had secured orders.
Chery said its car will be priced at a level that is “very suitable for families to buy.” The company, which is No. 1 in sales volume among Chinese auto makers that don’t have a foreign joint-venture partner, didn’t say when the car would be available
