Fernando Alonso insists he is “quite comfortable” with his decision to quit Renault at the end of 2006 to make his ill-fated move to McLaren.
Two-time world champion Alonso’s relationship with team boss Ron Dennis quickly soured, with the Spaniard unhappy over what he perceived as favouritism towards rookie Lewis Hamilton.
But the 26-year-old, who last week severed ties with the Woking-based marque just 12 months into a three-year deal, told Formula One’s official website: “The team did a fantastic job to have a competitive car so I was able to fight until the last race and finished only one point behind the champion. In that respect, I think it has been a very positive season. ” UKPress
The Spaniard ended his tumultuous spell with the British team just a year into his three-year deal last week and is reportedly close to agreeing an immediate return to Renault.
Despite high hopes at the start of the year that the relationship would lead to further glory for the double world champion, relations between the Spaniard and McLaren, in particular boss Ron Dennis, turned increasingly bitter amid claims from Alonso that he didn’t feel he was receiving enough support.
Against such a backdrop of tension, the 26-year-old still only missed out on winning a third straight world title by a single point.
Looking back on his failed title bid, he insists he has already put his 2007 disappointments behind him and is now focused on learning from this year’s lessons. ITV.com
Fernando Alonso has reportedly gone off on holiday and this is probably a good time to do it. The Spaniard has been much-rumoured as a future Renault driver but such decisions may now be put on hold until the FIA World Council meeting in Monaco in December. This has added an element of uncertainty about the future. Renault may be cleared of all the charges and completely exonerated. On the other hand there is the possibility that there will be sanctions if the team is found to have transgressed. GrandPrix.com
