With McLaren reportedly looking at Williams driver Nico Rosberg to replace Fernando Alonso, Williams’ co-owner Patrick Head has put forward the idea that maybe McLaren should instead sign Schumacher.
“Ron Dennis has proved to be a lateral thinker, which is why I am musing over the idea that he might look to Schumacher,” Head said.
“Michael’s still fit - and probably bored. I suspect he has found sitting on the pit wall dull.”
However, the seven-time world champion’s manager Willi Weber has rubbished his suggestion.
“It’s probably a one-off. Michael does not intend at all to go back to F1,” his spokeswoman told the BBC.
“He’s testing just as part of his contract, which is to help Ferrari in whichever area he can. SportingLife.com
PF1, however, believes Head’s suggestion is just his way of trying to throw McLaren off from chasing Williams’ own star driver Nico Rosberg.
He told the Mail on Sunday: “Ron Dennis has proved to be a lateral thinker, which is why I am musing over the idea that he might look to Schumacher.
“Michael’s still fit - and probably bored. I suspect he has found sitting on the pit wall dull.”
The Williams co-owner suggested that Michael might be a good choice for the the Mercedes-powered team amidst reports that McLaren is trying to install Rosberg alongside Hamilton for the 2008 season.
However, despite Head’s assertion that McLaren is in a position to offer the kind of salary that Michael Schumacher might demand, Mercedes’ Norbert Haug has said Alonso’s replacement will need to be “quick and inexpensive” - almost certainly ruling out the former Ferrari ace, adding that there is “no time frame” set out for naming the Spaniard’s replacement.
