Alonso’s best time was three-tenths of a second faster than Heikki Kovalainen’s best lap in his Renault, a much higher position than one normally sees from a Renault. Lewis Hamilton was third fastest in his McLaren but ended the session spinning off when he got into a tangle behind the very slow Spyker of Sakon Yamamoto. Lewis ended up stuck in the gravel.

The Formula One circus arrives in Budapest this weekend as the ‘espionage’ case between Ferrari and McLaren drags on and the title race really begins to hot up.
Two weeks ago in Germany Fernando Alonso stole a dramatic victory for McLaren, executing a daring overtaking move on Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in the closing stages of the race.
Heading into Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix the Spaniard is just two points behind his English rookie teammate Lewis Hamilton who remains top of the driver’s world championship.
