Earlier this year, the Brazilian played down the Hamilton hype, saying the Briton was unlikely to win a race.
But Hamilton, 22, now leads the standings from Fernando Alonso, who supplanted Fittipaldi as F1’s youngest champion in 2005, when he was 24.
“Lewis is very good, very determined and has the best chance of winning the title of anybody,” said Fittipaldi.

Two-time Formula One world champion Emerson Fittipaldi has tipped Lewis Hamilton to beat Fernando Alonso to this year’s drivers’ crown.
Hamilton currently leads the standings by five points from his McLaren team-mate.
Fittipaldi, now head of Team Brazil in the A1GP series, said: “Lewis is very good, very determined, and in my opinion has the best chance of winning the championship.”

Lewis Hamilton is being backed by two-time Formula One world champion Emerson Fittipaldi to secure this season’s drivers’ title.
The 22-year-old rookie Briton has made a flying start in F1 and currently holds a five-point lead over his McLaren team-mate and reigning champion Fernando Alonso.
And Fittipaldi, who now heads Team Brazil in the A1GP series, feels Spanish star Alonso is becoming too preoccupied with how Hamilton is performing and it is having a detrimental effect on his own progress.
