Former F1 Driver Alex Zanardi Competes In A Different Kind Of Race

Alex Zanardi, the Italian racecar driver who lost his legs in a crash in 2001, competed yesterday in the handcycle division of the New York City Marathon, his first marathon. Zanardi, 40, finished in 1 hour 33 minutes 17 seconds for fourth place.

“I was so nervous that I don’t think I slept more than three hours last night,” he said. “Nothing hurts. I’ve been in better shape, but I’m not demolished.”

Alejandro Albor of Elk Grove, Calif., won the men’s handcycle division in 1:17:48. Helene Hines of New York (1:57:18) was the only women’s finisher.
