Andrew Benson BBC Sport: A third team has become embroiled in the Formula One spying saga. It has emerged that Nigel Stepney, the man accused of leaking Ferrari secrets to McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan, also approached Honda. Stepney and Coughlan met Honda team boss Nick Fry last month to discuss them joining the outfit.

A Honda statement said: “At no point during this meeting was any confidential information offered or received.”

Auto Racing Daily Reports: Given the speculation surrounding the legal investigations at Ferrari and McLaren, the Honda Racing F1 Team would like to clarify that earlier this year Nigel Stepney, formerly of Scuderia Ferrari, requested a meeting with Nick Fry, Chief Executive Officer of the Honda Racing F1 Team.

ITV F1 Reports: Honda has confirmed that the Ferrari and McLaren engineers at the centre of the leaked data scandal currently engulfing Formula 1 jointly approached the team last month with a view to joining its technical staff.

The Japanese manufacturer released a statement at Silverstone this afternoon shortly after McLaren boss Ron Dennis confirmed that a third team was involved in the controversy.

Sky Sports Reports: While the local police have confirmed to Stepney that he is being investigated for ‘various crimes’, however, Italian news agency ANSA reports that the 47-year old may not have acted alone, claiming that two other team members were also under scrutiny.

Stepney’s Italian home was again searched on Thursday as police look for evidence - including email records - that he did indeed pass secrets to McLaren, which has refused to confirm media speculation that chief designer Mike Coughlan was the recipient.

ITV F1 Reports: The McLaren engineer at the centre of the espionage saga that has rocked Formula 1 is believed to be the team’s chief designer Mike Coughlan.

McLaren announced on Tuesday that it had suspended a senior member of its technical staff after learning that he had received classified information from a Ferrari employee at the end of April.
