F1: Heikki Kovalainen got his first taste of champagne as an F1 driver last Sunday ing-renaultf1

In appalling conditions and torrential rain, the ING Renault F1 Team scored 12 points on its first visit to Fuji last Sunday, and thereby cemented its position in the constructors’ championship. It was the highest points total of any team from the weekend, and was a welcome reward for the team’s efforts after months of unstinting effort to improve the performance of the car. After a tough season, this podium finish will spur the team on towards some strong performances in the final rounds – and give some momentum to carry into the winter.

Heikki Kovalainen got his first taste of champagne as an F1 driver last Sunday. After starting eleventh, the Finn drove a composed race in the conditions to take his place on the second step of the podium, after holding off his compatriot Kimi Raikkonen in the closing stages. It was just reward for a consistent season that has seen him score points eleven times in fifteen races, and string together seven consecutive points finishes since Silverstone. His team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella was also back on the scoreboard for the first time since July, in spite of inconsistent handling. The Renault Boys will both be looking to get back in the points this weekend in China.

The podium ceremony hadn’t even finished, and the boys were already packing up the garage to head for Shanghai. The Chinese circuit will host the penultimate round of the 2007 championship, and although the ING Renault F1 Team is on something of a high, they will be starting again from zero this weekend. The objective will be to finish the season on a high, and to do so, the recipe combines rigorous preparation and hard work.

So join us at 7am UK time on Sunday morning as the 2007 season heads to its close. After all, a world championship may be won, and much more besides!
