The reigning world champions are now clearly on their way back to the front. Technical Director Bob Bell is convinced of it. The North American rounds suggest it is the case, as the team scored as many points as direct rival BMW – and outscored them in Indy. As the championship returns to Europe, the French team is finding the performance it needs, although there is plenty of hard work ahead until the job is complete. The team is still pushing forward, and the teams in Enstone and Viry are currently rolling out new performance and reliability developments for both chassis and engine.
Heikki confirms his potential
After a strong race in the Canadian GP one week previously, Heikki Kovalainen took the bull by the horns in Indianapolis, putting together a near-perfect weekend at the famous old Speedway. After qualifying 6th, he made up places in the race – and ran strongly enough to lead for five laps during the first stops! Pushing all the way, the Finn finished fifth. Team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, meanwhile, was headed for another strong points finish – but a mistake on lap two destroyed his chances. His drive back through the field was dynamic and impressive, but he fell short of the points in P9…
