McLaren today called for a reclassification of the Formula One world championship that would see Lewis Hamilton handed the title.
Motorsport’s world governing body, the FIA, are set to rule on McLaren’s appeal over the decision not to punish BMW Sauber and Williams for using ‘cool fuel’ at the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix.
If the FIA upholds the McLaren appeal, Hamilton could be promoted to fourth, gaining enough points to take the title from Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

McLaren-Mercedes have asked the ruling motorsport body FIA to overturn the result of the Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix which could make their driver Lewis Hamilton world champion more than three weeks after the end of the season.
The hearing in London lasted four hours and FIA said it would make the ruling by its International Court of Appeal public on Friday from its Paris headquarters.

McLaren were today accused of being “naked opportunists” in their bid to see Lewis Hamilton crowned this year’s formula one world champion. In the run-up to the court of appeal hearing into the ‘cool fuel’ row, McLaren officials and Hamilton himself insisted they did not want to win the title in the courtroom.
Yet their statements made stark contrast with the submissions of lawyer, Ian Mill QC, who called for a reclassification of the championship. That led to a sharp retort from Ferrari’s legal representative, Nigel Tozzi QC, defending the interests of both the team and Kimi Raikkonen, who won the driver’s championship on the track.
