Williams’ Indian test driver Narain Karthikeyan has downplayed the chances of his country hosting a F1 Grand Prix in 2009.

Driving abilities be damned. It is the colour of the money that has prevailed. It has ensured a seat for the Japanese driver Sakon Yamamoto in Spyker F1 team, leaving India’s hopeful Narain Karthikeyan out in the cold.

Yamamoto will turn out in Spyker colours for the remaining seven races in the Grand Prix calendar while Karthikeyan will continue to be the Test driver for Williams.

Narain Karthikeyan was still in discussion with Spyker F1 team over a possible racing position for the remainder of 2007 season, the Indian driver’s agent said today.

“Spyker team principal Colin Kolles spoke to me this morning. We are still in dialogue,” Mark Perkins, Karthikeyan’s agent in Monaco, said over phone.

Reports quoted Karthikeyan have said that Spyker have made an offer and he was yet to decide on it.

India’s Narain Karthikeyan would be delighted to return as a Formula One driver after being linked with a possible move to Spyker, he said yesterday.

The Williams test driver and Austrian Christian Klien are being considered to replace Dutch driver Christijan Albers, who Spyker dropped due to non-payment by one of his main sponsors.

Klien is currently the Honda test driver after three seasons with Red Bull and their predecessors Jaguar. - Gulf-Daily-News

India’s Narain Karthikeyan could be in line for a Formula One comeback as replacement for dropped Dutch driver Christijan Albers at Spyker.

Team boss Colin Kolles said that Karthikeyan, who raced for him at Jordan in 2005 and is now the second Williams test driver, was on his list of possible options. Markus Winkelhock, already under contract to Spyker as a test driver and in possession of the necessary super licence, may however be drafted in first for what would be a home race at the Nuerburgring in Germany next week.
