McLaren are awash with positive thinking. Disappointment has given way to determination. The own goal of China has been put to bed. Lewis Hamilton is preparing to bend it like Beckham in Brazil.
Whenever questions have been asked since Hamilton has answered them emphatically. The controversy of Monaco, where he complained of being held back by McLaren as Alonso governed the race from pole, was followed by a maiden win in Canada. The response to dominating performances by Alonso in Britain and Germany was victory in Hungary. After Monza and Spa, where Alonso again held a convincing upper hand, Hamilton stormed back in Japan. One day, perhaps after victory in Brazil, our faith will match his. Kevin Garside, Telegraph
The slight mistake that cost Lewis Hamilton his chance of wrapping up the formula one title here on Sunday is unlikely to prey on his mind when he attempts to become the first rookie driver to win the world championship at the Brazilian grand prix on October 21.
“The great thing about Lewis is you just know he can cope, “ said Ron Dennis, the McLaren chairman. “He’s probably one of the few formula one drivers who could quote you sections from the FIA regulations. He wants to understand everything and to be the best driver and team member in every respect. He is totally focused on being the best driver in formula one. “ Alan Henry, GuardianUnlimited
Britain’s motor racing stars of the past have backed the star of the present to claim the Formula One crown in Brazil in a fortnight’s time. Lewis Hamilton’s championship lead was cut to just four points when he became stranded in a Shanghai gravel trap, but knights of the track Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss are confident that the Briton will bounce back in South America to defy Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.
Asked on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek show if he thought Hamilton, who he tipped earlier in the season to go all the way, would clinch the title, Stewart said: “Yes, I do. What he has done this year is quite remarkable. The boy’s skill and talent – he has won four grands prix, he has been in pole positions, he has done fastest laps – it is really fairytale stuff. I think he will. I think he has got the legs, I think he’s got the ability, I think McLaren have the car. “ Andrew Baker, Telegraph
Formula One great Sir Stirling Moss believes Lewis Hamilton will have put his Shanghai disappointment firmly behind him when he lines up for the Brazilian Grand Prix in just under two weeks’ time.
He added: “The good news is that even though a world title hangs on the Brazil race, I’ll bet it doesn’t change his outlook at all. UKPress
“As long as I can do this job with the team I want to be with, being competitive and vying for championships, then I’ll always be happy. “
And Hamilton has likened himself to the laid-back Raikkonen, who is also chasing his first world title.
“They say Kimi’s ice-cool, like he’s flat-lined, but I think my subconscious is pretty much like that, “ he said. BBCSport
