Nineteen-year-old Indonesian Ryan Haryanto beat three other candidates to earn an all-expenses-paid place in the scholarship trials for the 2008 Formula BMW Asia season. If he manages to impress the instructors at the trials, Haryanto could enter the series next year with a 50.000 Euro cash contribution towards the season and free enrolment in the comprehensive Education & Coaching Programme.
Said a delighted Haryanto on receiving the news: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I’m really pleased I was chosen. My fellow drivers are all very good, so I had to work incredibly hard. I’ll certainly make the most of the chance Formula BMW Asia and PT BMW Indonesia have given me, and can’t wait for the scholarship trials. ”
Formula BMW Asia and PT BMW Indonesia selected four talented local karters and the youngsters were put through their paces in the FB02 on July 23 at Sentul International Circuit outside Jakarta, following the latest rounds of Formula BMW Asia held there at the weekend. The four were judged on their experience, previous success, racing line, braking, shifting, and each was given a personal interview to assess overall attitude.
All four performed well, and deciding on a winner was a tough call for the team evaluating the youngsters. However, it was Haryanto who had the edge over his fellow countrymen and demonstrated the most potential.
Born in Solo, Haryanto was Indonesian kart champion in 2001, 2002, and 2004, and currently leads the Asian Rotax Max series. He comes from a family of racers, his father having competed in Asia’s first single seater series, while his 14-year-old brother races karts in Asia and in Italy.
Haryanto beat Rama Danindro, Yulda Saputra and Al Semiawan to take the prize, which includes flights and accommodation at the scholarship trials, courtesy of PT BMW Indonesia. The exact date and venue for the trials will be announced at a later date.
The popularity of Formula BMW Asia is growing rapidly in Indonesia, thanks partly to the excellent performance of local racer Zahir Ali. With new Team TARADTM, Ali has won four races so far this season and is currently 3rd in the Driver Classification. He gave local fans plenty to cheer about at the weekend, taking three wins in four races.
