A mere two point’s separate Aussie Racing Cars Series leader Brad Ward and his brother James heading into the final round of the action packed series in what will be a grandstand finish at Gold Coast’s Indy Street Circuit this weekend.
Three thrilling races will decide the Series where five drivers including the Ward duo, defending champion Paul Kemal, Ben McCashney and Kyle Clews are in contention to come away with the widely sought after title.
Current points leader Brad Ward will look to qualify up front and get a solid start as he tries to tame the field of over 30 ‘pocket rockets’ at the technical street circuit.
“This weekend is going to be ‘full on’ as there are a number of drivers who are looking to knock me off the top of the point standings; and with only three races to do so everyone is going to go out all guns blazing,” Brad said.
Ben McCashney comes into the round on the back of his first race and round victory at Sandown Raceway, and while he currently sits fourth in the standings another round win could see him hold aloft the Series trophy.
Brad’s biggest threat to his title aspirations will be his brother James, the 2004 champion, who has trailed closely throughout the year.
“It is going to be an all or nothing weekend, but in saying that, if I can score victory in the first race it will set me up for a good weekend,” said James.
This weekend will be the third street circuit the ‘pocket rockets’ have visited this year, giving all of the competitors plenty of time to get used to be surrounded by walls. The tight and technical circuit will allow plenty of overtaking as was seen last year where Nick Percat flew from the rear of the field to hit the front in a matter of laps.
Hometown hero Steve MacGregor holds a handy buffer in the Masters Cup ahead of Shane Wolki while Ryan Flynn sits in third.
After snagging the series last year MacGregor has been the class of this field in 2007 leading for most of the year posting exceptional results that also sees him inside the top 10 of the overall standings, likewise Wolki.
Series newcomer Ryan Flynn will need a lot of luck and the misfortune of MacGregor and Wolki to take out the class; but he does have one hand on third place in the class which would be a fantastic result for someone who has never raced at any of the circuits before.
Practice commences tomorrow at 9:40am while qualifying is at 12:20pm followed by the first of three races at 3:45pm in the most anticipated round of the year.
