The one thing that auto makers have found, in the more than 100 years since the industry got on its feet, is that there is almost always a customer for nearly anything you make.
Some manufacturers succeeded wildly—General Motors’ Corvette is one sterling example. Others failed—Ford’s Edsel comes to mind.
The dolphin-like shape of the car—drooping nose in front, rising up to a high center section, then tapering off downwards in the rear—was done largely for the sake of aerodynamics. That is also why it has three wheels instead of four.
The Aptera weighs about 1,700 pounds and, will have a top speed of about 90 mph and a range of about 100 miles with two people on board and 250 pounds of luggage in the small trunk under the hatchback.
Price will be about $25,000 and already has 4,000 customers who have ordered cars.
