Auto Manufacturer Returning to Three Wheels

From 1909 to 1953, in excess of 30,000 Morgan Threewheelers were produced. On the track, Morgan Motor Company’s (MMC) aerodynamic, lightweight Threewheeler was at home. It captured victory at the French Grand Prix in 1913 and lapped banked tracks at speeds that were remarkable for the times. Now, the legendary Threewheeler, done up with modern-day technology, returns for duty.

MMC’s 2011 Threewheeler features a “Screaming Eagle” 1800cc engine hoisted from Harley Davidson and a five-speed gearbox lifted from Mazda. A tubular frame with rollover bars to protect occupants and an aerodynamic, bullet-shaped hull complete the package. With a sub-1,100 pound curb weight and some slippery aerodynamics, the Threewheeler is destined to be an efficient runner, but its racing heritage has not been overlooked. In this application, Harley’s Screaming Eagle cranks out an estimated 100 horsepower, which is enough to shoot this trike to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds and to a projected top speed of 115 mph.

The Morgan Threewheeler can be built to custom specs, but you’d better be prepared to shell out some coin. The base model is estimated to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $72,000 and one-off versions will, naturally, be more.

The 2011 Morgan Threewheeler is a fusion of modern technology into a classic design. By fitting the latest “Screaming Eagle” 1800 cc engine from Harley Davidson and a Mazda 5 speed gearbox the car provides ‘get in and drive’ simplicity and reliability.
