The Avalanche Racing Team comes off a two-week respite, and will swing into full gear this weekend at the Nielsen Enterprises Grand Finale at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa. The event is the 10th and final race of the 2006-2007 WPSA PowerSports Snowmobile Tour season. Racing action kicks off tomorrow and runs through Sunday.
Avalanche’s Pro rider, “Monster†Mike Schultz (No. 5 Avalanche Racing Team/Polaris) has recovered his mindset and is ready to add to his already impressive record of three podium finishes, including two runner-up efforts. Though Schultz is mathematically eliminated in Pro Open points in fifth, he remains right in the thick of the Pro Stock title chase. Sitting fourth, Schultz has an uphill battle, but one he’s ready to take on.
“We had a difficult weekend in Canterbury, but coming home to Geneva is like a breath of fresh air, †said Schultz. “There’s just some exciting about being here, at Avalanche Racing’s home track.
“Taking last weekend off really helped me recover my competitive edge, †added Schultz. “I trained hard, but I also got some rest. We’re starting from zero this weekend. I set a goal at the beginning of the season to win five podiums. I have three, so I need to get two more this weekend. I know I’m up to that challenge. â€
Andrew Johnstad, known by the moniker “Hollywood†in the Snocross ranks, is looking for his fifth podium here. Johnstad (No. 255 Avalanche Racing/Polaris) sits second in Semi-Pro Stock points and is seventh in the Pro Open standings. He remains in contention for both.
“We definitely have our work cut out for us this weekend, but this team has been through more difficult situations and they always seem to come through in a crunch, †said Johnstad. “Everyone on the team is jazzed for this weekend’s race, myself included. We want those championships. â€
