With the exception of some special editions of Gran Turismo, the Monte Carlo Rally for Alternative Energy Vehicles might be your only chance to see a Ford Fiesta race a Tesla Roadster. Luckily for Ford, the cars compete in different categories.
The Tesla, a trio of Ford diesels and a Toyota Prius cleaned up at the third annual alt fuel rally, which sees some of the most innovative eco-friendlier vehicles go head to head on city streets and country roads. The race kicks off the Alternative Energies Cup, a series of 18 races the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile holds in Europe, Japan and Canada.
Tesla took first in the EV category by default because the RUF electric Porsche 911 pulled out and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV didn’t have sufficient range to compete. What’s more, the Tesla shattered its maximum range rating of 244 miles after completing the entire 240.8 mile rally with the dashboard display showing 38 miles worth of juice to spare. The Prius dominated the hybrid category.
Ford did an impressive job in the fossil fuel category, taking first, second and fourth with its Fiesta Econetic diesels we wish Ford would bring to America.
