Volkswagen Unveiled BlueMotionTechnologies - First Hybrid Coming to Canada

Volkswagen Canada unveiled its BlueMotionTechnologies brand at this year’s Vancouver International Auto Show (VIAS) as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, and confirmed that Hybrid power train technology would be offered in Canada under this new umbrella brand in the future.

According to John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc., the Volkswagen Brand is responding to the economic and environmental challenges facing the auto industry:

“Despite a difficult economic climate Volkswagen is well positioned with its lineup of fuel efficient vehicles to weather the current storm and prosper in the future. As such Volkswagen has set out to become one of world’s greenest automakers.”

White outlined how Volkswagen’s global sustainability mission would bring “important dividends” to the company’s efforts in Canada. He noted Volkswagen’s achievements in reducing vehicle emissions and enhancing fuel economy and efficiency through alternative power trains as demonstrated through the Canadian introduction of its newest global brand, BlueMotionTechnologies.

Volkswagen’s Canadian chief continued by stating: “Under this umbrella, Volkswagen Canada will now unite all of its research and development activities towards environmental sustainability in personal transportation.”

Energy efficiency is shaping the current public debate worldwide, and the development of efficient and low-emission technologies is regarded as important to manufacturers and consumers.

This focus on sustainability represents a major and global investment for Volkswagen in offering choices for vehicle consumers. The company explained during the recent Geneva Motor Show that the “Green Revolution” underway today is actually a “Blue” evolution for Volkswagen as it has been actively practicing proactive environmental measures in all aspects of its manufacturing over many years.

In Geneva, Volkswagen clarified why it chose BlueMotion, by stating: “Blue is the colour of the ocean and the sky. Blue stands for freshness, hope, and lightness, and, of course, blue is also the colour of Volkswagen.”

In short, BlueMotionTechnologies stands for Volkswagen’s German-engineering and design competence in developing environment-friendly technologies and products.

Volkswagen Canada already offers a number of these fuel-saving and emissions-lowering BlueMotionTechnologies such as TSI direct injection engines, DSG dual-clutch gearboxes, and TDI Clean Diesel engines.

The TSI 2.0 litre direct injection gasoline engines are found in the Volkswagen GTI, Jetta, GLI, Tiguan, Eos, and Passat Sedan and Wagon models, as well as in AJAC’s Best New Family Sedan over $30,000, the Passat CC. TSI power train technology is a recipe for maximum power with minimum fuel consumption from a smaller engine. Direct gasoline injection with a turbocharger allows cleaner and more efficient combustion that lowers CO2 emissions. This saves fuel and increases power output compared to naturally aspirated engines.
