John Force returned to his Southern California home this week after spending 27 days at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Force, 58, suffered a compound fracture of his left ankle, a broken right foot, broken fingers on his right hand and ligament and tendon damage to his right knee in a 300-mph crash Sept. 23.
The 14-time National Hot Rod Association Funny Car champion is hoping to attend the season finale at Pomona Nov. 4 as a spectator.
Early this month, John Force began undergoing physical therapy at the Baylor Institute of Rehabilitation. He is expected to continue his daily regimen in his home state in preparation for return to competition in the 2008 season. SignonSanDiego.com
“I can’t say enough about the care they’ve given me at Baylor,” Force said. “I couldn’t have been in better hands, but going home tells me that I’m making real progress. It’s still hard, the physical therapy, but I have a goal and that’s what gets me up and going every morning.”
John Force, a 125-time NHRA tour winner, plans to attend at least one day of this week’s race at Las Vegas, Nevada, to show his support for daughter and Driving Force costar Ashley Force, and son-in-law Robert Hight. Both drive Ford Mustangs, backed by Castrol GTX and Automobile Club of Southern California, that are almost identical to the one Force was driving at the time of the crash.
Force plans to return to his place behind the wheel when his team starts testing for the 2008 season in January. However, BIR Medical Director Dr. Amy Wilson said that the Driving Force star still has some way to go before reaching full recovery. At this time, he is confined to a wheelchair or a walker, as he has been instructed not to place any weight on his left ankle for another month. BuddyTV.com
