Cory McClenathan joined select drag racing company Sunday with his first-round victory over J. R. Todd in the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park. It was the 400th round win of his nearly 16-year career.
“That is quite a milestone, ” said McClenathan, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. “And it puts me in good company with the likes of John Force and Kenny Bernstein. I really didn’t pay much attention to how many round wins I had, but this quite an accomplishment. “
That victory took 4.618 seconds at a speed of 314.97 mph against Todd’s 8.040 at 104.91 mph.
In his run for 401, the FRAM dragster lost traction and the race against Melanie Troxel. Cory Mac was timed in 8.870 at 84.18 mph while Troxel won with a 4.629 at 319.52.
“We really didn’t change anything on the car from the first round, ” he said. “The guys did move me over into a different place on the track after my burnout, but that wasn’t the problem. The tires went up (in smoke) fairly quickly after I hit the throttle. I waited before I pedaled it and when I saw Melanie pulling away, I shut it off. ”
