As soon as Dave Connolly let the clutch out in the first round of the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway Sunday, he knew he was in trouble because the tires began shaking and the car sashayed to the left.
That move enabled Warren Johnson to cruise to the win in 7.207seconds at 191.48 mph to Connolly’s slowing 8.188 at 104.07.
“The car shook and moved around and when the it finally settled down I saw how far ahead he was I lifted, ” said Connolly, who remained third in NHRA POWERade Series standings with 885 points.
Crew chief Tommy Utt quickly accepted full blame.
“I must’ve been stupid this morning, ” Utt said. “I just missed the tune-up.
