Going In Circles, Playing In The Dirt
During this one free weekend, when the NHRA POWERade tour takes a break from a string of eight races in nine weeks, Del Worsham will find himself back in a race car, but the surroundings and the racing technique will be completely foreign to him. Worsham has entered the Gary Scelzi & Friends All-Star Challenge at Giant Chevrolet Raceway in Visalia, Calif., where he will be joined on the fifth-mile dirt track by NHRA stars Ron Capps, J.R. Todd, Morgan Lucas, Cory McClenathan, and the event organizer and host, Gary Scelzi. All the straight-line drivers will be roaring around the circuit in open-wheel Mini-Sprint cars, which are powerful enough to reach 60 mph on the small oval.
Worsham traveled to the track on Wednesday (June 13) to participate in a practice session, and as he told NHRA.com Senior Editor Rob Geiger, “I’m still alive, so tonight was a success. Physically, this is very demanding. It’s a huge workout on your arms and forearms. The first time out there I did like five laps and I was toast. I tried it again and made like 10 laps before I started getting sloppy, and it was simply because I was getting tired again. I guess I need to live in the gym until Saturday. “
The 20-lap All-Star race will be held Saturday night, and will raise funds to upgrade the local track (home track for Scelzi’s young son, Dominic, who drives a Mini-Sprint car there regularly) and for DRAW, drag racing’s biggest charity.
