Jack Beckman returns to Pomona Raceway this weekend, home of his “day” job as an instructor at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, and site of his record-setting weekend at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. In the last two of only five Funny Car races he ran at the end of last year, Beckman won one event (Las Vegas) in two final rounds (Vegas and Pomona), qualified No. 1 once (Pomona), and set both ends of the national record (Pomona).
Although he missed getting into the Countdown to One playoffs, which will culminate with champions being named this weekend, Beckman is excited to compete again at Pomona Raceway following last weekend’s Las Vegas event.
“The positive we took out of Vegas is we tested good there prior to the event, and we qualified well there (No. 5). So, going into Pomona we have good data and the Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger R/T has done everything we wanted it to do.
“The deal in the first round was just a fluke, ” he said of his starting line breakdown. “It was a part that never breaks that broke. I can’t wait to get back to Pomona. Vegas is my second home track, Pomona is my home track. I work there, I feel comfortable there, I’ve got tons of friends who are going to be there, and we’ve got a great hot rod.
“Last year we set the national record at Pomona. I can’t wait to show the rest of the Funny Cars what we can do this time. “
Mail Terminal Services will feature Camp Victory this weekend in Pomona, Calif., in its “Mail from Home” program. Postcards will be available to send to this war-zone camp at the Don Schumacher Racing hospitality area as well as at a kiosk in the U. S. Army “Racing Zone, ” the U. S. Army Interactive area located in Nitro Alley.
