John Coughlin checked off the first item on his to do list at this year’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals when he claimed a win during Friday’s Super Stock class eliminations. Racing his Jegs Mail Order Cobalt in the SS/CM class, Coughlin drove to an 8.74 to defeat Chuck Gallagher Jr., in the final round.
“Every Super Stock racer wants to win one of the cool NHRA Wally trophies that they award to class champions,” said Coughlin, referring to the specially designed trophy which is named after NHRA founder Wally Parks. “My Cobalt is a new car this year and our Jegs team has worked hard to make it one of the fastest Super Stock cars in the country. This trophy means a lot to me because it symbolizes all the hard work and the long hours that my team has put in this year.”
Of the nearly 180 Super Stock racers who competed at this year’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Coughlin is qualified sixth. He will have a day off on Saturday in order to prepare for the first round of eliminations, which is scheduled to take place Sunday morning.
“We’re going to take a little while to celebrate this win and then it’s back to work,” he said. “It’s one thing to win during class eliminations, but I really want to win the big trophy that goes to the last man standing on Monday afternoon. My brothers, Troy, Mike and Jeg, have all won the U.S. Nationals during their careers and I’d like nothing more than to join them. That has always been my main goal.”
