Recent success at the Heartland Park Topeka could not help Tommy Johnson this weekend at the 19th annual O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX.
Johnson shook the SKOAL Racing Chevrolet Impala at the beginning of the run, pedaled and recovered to a time of 5.206 but it wasn’t enough to catch Jack Beckman (4.846) who posted the second quickest time of the opening round. The first round loss to Beckman dropped Johnson Jr. one spot in the POWERade Championship Point Standings to 12th.
“It’s disappointing because of the success I have had in the past at Topeka, ” said Johnson Jr. “The bright side is that the SKOAL Racing Team can put this weekend behind us, as we are excited about returning to Joliet this weekend. ”
Johnson Jr. and the SKOAL Racing Team make their way to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL for The Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals. Qualifying times take place on Friday, June 8 at 4:30 & 8:00 PM CT and on Sunday, June 9 at 1:00 & 4:30 PM CT.
The finals of the Funny Car division saw Mike Ashley hold off Jim Head to earn his long-awaited first Funny Car trophy. Ashley moved up to third overall in the POWERade Championship Point Standings.
