Justin Humphreys surprised a competitive Pro Stock field with two strong qualifying runs to take the provisional Pro Stock No. 1 berth Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
His 6.750-second, 204.05-mph lap came in the first run and held up. He added a 4.758 time in the second attempt that, Humphreys said, “could’ve been a lot better. The car made a move to the left off the starting line. “
Humphreys, driving the RaceRedi/Knoll-Gas Energy Pontiac GTO, has a four-thousandths of a second advantage over Dave Connolly going into Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions.
“This is my favorite race track, ” said the NHRA rookie of the year candidate. “I raced here 10 or 12 times when I was racing in Sport Compact and Nopi series. It is very exciting to be No. 1. Bringing on (10-time Pro Stock champion and Pro Stock icon) Bob Glidden has been a big help, along with Richard Maskin, who builds our engines. That’s a lot of experience there.
“I think we should be able to run quicker in Saturday’s opening session. ”
