A Kenny Koretsky sighting in the NHRA POWERade Series Pro Stock top 10 is not to be taken lightly, especially this year.
The popular entrepreneur/driver from Richboro, Pa., merged his team with Greg Hill’s late last season and the new Indicom Electric/Nitro Fish Chevy Cobalt combination appears to be one of the best rides Koretsky’s had in his 25 years of Pro Stock racing. His only finish among the elite 10 came in 2004, when he was ninth.
“I think we have a real good shot at winning the race at Phoenix, †said Koretsky, who is looking for his first national-event victory. “It is one of my favorite places to go. â€
He wrote himself into the NHRA record books at Firebird in 1991 when he qualified his Pro Stock and Top Fuel cars in the same race. He went on to win the first round in each category, too.
Koretsky’s and the team’s confidence got a boost when he opened the 2007 season with a fifth-place starting berth among a stellar field of competitors at the Winternationals, Feb. 11, at Pomona, Calif. And he sees no reason why things should change as the 23-race schedule runs its course.
“We qualified well at Pomona and our team jelled, †he said. “I think Eddie (Guarnaccia, his crew chief) and Tomi (Laine, Hill’s crew chief) worked well together and Steve Schmidt’s engines proved they have a lot of power. Our goal is to qualify well at Phoenix and try to go rounds on Sunday. â€
Koretsky’s quickest run at Pomona was 6.659 seconds at 207.82 mph. He was paired against newcomer Rodger Brogdon in the first round. “I didn’t want to lose to him and I knew he had a reputation as a good (starting line) leaver. I wanted to make sure I left first, †said Koretsky, who left 11-thousandths of a second too soon and fouled out. “I’ll be ready to go this weekend. â€
The action begins with Pro Stock qualifying sessions at 1:30 and 4 p. m. and concludes with runs Saturday at noon at 2:30 p. m. Eliminations start at 11 a. m. Sunday.
