After opening with the third quickest pass on Friday, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team entered the second day of qualifying at the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals looking to fine-tune their set-up and secure their position in Monday’s final eliminations field. Although they continued to run well, with two runs in the 6.6-second range and reset the O’Reilly Raceway Park track top speed record at 207.27 mph, their initial effort remained their run of record, slotting them in the fifth position. With two final attempts remaining, Johnson set his sights on ascending in the standings on Sunday.
“We made two runs today and shook on both of them. Fortunately, we know what not to do for tomorrow. We made some changes coming into today, most of which were related to the tires, which the car obviously didn’t like, so we’ll change it back to what we had on Friday.
“If we can get that fixed and move on, I think our ACDelco Cobalt will be pretty quick – after all, right now we have top speed of the meet. The new motor is showing some potential, and the left lane should be fast tomorrow morning. I’m looking forward to the morning session and think we have a shot at the pole. We need to make every point we can right now, and being the No. 1 qualifier would give us eight points right off the bat. That’s what we’re focused on for tomorrow. ”
