The POWERade Drag Racing Series opened its inaugural visit to Summit Motorsports Park with two qualifying sessions on Friday, and ACDelco racer Kurt Johnson tried to make the most of the opportunity. On each attempt, Johnson’s distinctive red, white and blue Cobalt went straight down the quarter mile, recording two of the better times among the 25 cars vying for one of 16 spots in Sunday’s starting field.
Sitting in the eighth position based on his 6.673-second, 206.76 mph run from Friday evening, Johnson hoped to use one of his final two runs on Saturday to secure a top half starting spot and the resultant lane choice for Sunday’s final eliminations of the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals.
“Naturally, we would have liked to run quicker, but are somewhat happy to know we left something on the table and are still eighth on Friday night. We fine tuned the set-up on our ACDelco Cobalt after Englishtown, and it seems to like it.
“We’re looking at lane choice, because it will probably be huge on Sunday. Although we’re eighth right now, I’d like to move up in the morning session to give us a cushion and make sure we’re in the top half. Still, it’s not a bad way to start the day at a new track. ”
