It’s going to be a fun weekend for Morgan Lucas, driver of the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster at the second annual Torco Race Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park. Of notice, he’s celebrating his Division 4 Lucas Oil championship for his sportsman Top Alcohol team in his bid for that national title; he now hopes that momentum will carry him through to his first professional win.
Although, he’s already accomplished so much in his young Top Fuel career, he starts his 131st round of competition out of 67 national event starts with a new optimism that will lead him to that elusive first victory.
“We’re running absolutely great, ” said Lucas remembering his recent string of semi-final round appearances. “We’re qualifying in the top half of the field and that’s given us a great starting position on Sunday. Our performance in the tune up area of the dragster is improving every race and we’re steadily gaining on it to run up front. I think we’ll surprise more than a few people this weekend. ”
Despite not having the season Lucas would have preferred is well aware of the logic behind the upswing of the team’s level of competition of recent late and is showing signs of great things to come.
“Since we’ve improved so much from the start of the season, it builds your confidence behind the wheel, ” said a smiling Lucas. “That’s gives you the advantage to attack the track. We’re not chasing points, so we can relax and give it a positive effort seeing what kind of rewards we can reap. It’s going to be fun to just go out and focus on winning. ”
On a somber note, Lucas feels the same suffering of all drag racers with the loss of NHRA founder, Wally Parks, who passed away over the weekend at age 94.
“I’m truly shocked about his passing and he will be sorely missed, ” said Lucas. “I know he would want us to keep racing and live up to his expectations. It’s because of his love of drag racing; his desire would be for us to chase our dreams and make drag racing bigger and better and for us, as drivers, to be the best we can be. He was a living legend. ”
