Popular NHRA Top Fuel driver Clay Millican and the crew of SPEED TV’s “Blow It Up! ” will be at Memphis Motorsports Park on Wednesday, July 25, to tape the fifth and final episode of the new show pilot.
The public is invited to attend the taping free of charge, beginning at 10:00 a. m. Spectators are asked to enter the facility at the drag strip entrance off Fite Road, at Gate 1 – “Nitro Boulevard. ”
Millican was selected by Rich Christensen, the creator and host of “Pinks, ” to host his own show called “Blow It Up! ” The second of five episodes airs this Sunday, July 22, at 9:00 p. m. as part of SPEED TV’s “Launch Hour” – a new series premiering show pilots whose futures will be determined by viewer feedback.
“Blow It Up” features speed shop entries from around the United States in an 1/8-mile or 1/4-mile, heads-up, hot-lap format until one competitor cannot make it back to the starting line or “blows it up. ” For the Memphis taping, Millican will be putting two Tennessee speed shops to the test.
“I’ve had people tell me during ‘Pinks’ they can build a car that won’t fail, ” Christensen said. “Well, now it’s time to put up or shut up. Clay is going to push these racers and top engine builders to the ‘breaking point’ at the drag strip. We’re going to see how many launches, burn-outs, full runs and more their car will take without blowing up. It’s not about prizes – it’s all about pride! ”
According to Millican, “It’s me versus the cars, “ he said. “I’m in control of everything, and there are practically no rules. Like the name says, I’m trying to blow these suckers up, and they’re trying to survive. It’s crazy. “
Millican is a 6-time IHRA Top Fuel World Champion, as well as a “hometown” hero who cut his drag-racing teeth at Memphis Motorsports Park and has a home and race shop just north of the track in Atoka, Tenn. He began drag racing like many of his peers – taking his street car to the track. He won IHRA races in modified eliminator before stepping up to a Top Fuel car. With 50 career wins, he is in his 10th year of Top Fuel racing and his first full season in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, which returns to Memphis on Sept. 14-16 for the 20th anniversary of the O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals.
