Tommy Johnson Jr., and the SKOAL Racing team look towards closing the season out on a high-note when they and the rest of the NHRA superstars make their way east to Petersburg, VA for the 2nd annual Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals October 5-7 at Virginia Motorsports Park.
In Johnson’s previous showing in Dallas, Johnson Jr. defeated second seeded Jeff Arend to advance to the second round against Tony Pedregon before losing in a nip-and-tuck match-up versus Pedregon.
“Our car’s performance seems to be turning the corner, ” said Johnson. “We are finding a base line after making several major changes to the car over the year. I am looking forward to having three good races to close out the 2008 season. “
Despite Pedregon’s win in Funny Car, the story of the weekend was the multitude of injuries to John Force, who suffered two broken legs and injuries to his hands and arms in a high-speed collision with Kenny Bernstein.
“We made changes to our chassis since John Force’s crash at the Dallas race, ” said Johnson. “I’m very lucky to have such a great owner and crew chief that are willing to do whatever it takes to give me a safe racecar. It gives me a lot of confidence as a driver to know my racecar is as safe as we can make it. “
Johnson currently sits in 10th place in the 2007 NHRA POWERade Championship Point Standings.
