Skoal Racing’s Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr. is coming off the most time he gets to spend at home all season and is hoping this will give his season a boost towards a strong finish. He is seeking a solid performance from his Skoal Racing Chevy Impala as he heads to Memphis, TN for the 2007 O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals at the Memphis Motorsports Park.
While in Indianapolis, he faced off against some of the best Funny Car drivers the NHRA had to offer in the Skoal Showdown, and won his first round battle against John Force. Johnson was bested by the Showdown’s eventual winner, Jack Beckman, but continues to look forward to coming out on top in the next race, as all great racers do.
“Our first round win over John Force in the Skoal Showdown was outstanding, especially after getting runner-up to him in the final last year, ” said Johnson. “We had some issues when the weather conditions were best, so it was virtually impossible for us to get qualified during the hotter conditions. We put a lot of hours in at the shop to get things figured out with our car for the Mid-South Nationals, and I expect different results at Memphis where I have won in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. ”
Johnson posted a semifinal finish in the 2005 O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals, but he took home the gold in Memphis with the Funny Car in 1999 and in Top Fuel in 1994. Only two drivers have won in both classes at Memphis: Johnson and ESPN commentator Mike Dunn.
