The overall lack of sustained success (translation no Sprint Cup title) doesn’t bother the man. Junior has come to terms that he isn’t the best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be. He said as much used for today’s profile of NASCAR’s “Reluctant Hero”.
“If it doesn’t happen, what’s my life going to be like?” Earnhardt said. Am I going to become an alcoholic, hide out in some [darn] town house and disappear or what? That’s the way everybody makes it sound. You don’t win a championship, life’s over.
“I sit there and I think, it is important to me and it is my No. 1 goal. I will be sad to not have it happen. I will have to come to terms with that, and it ain’t going to be, like, easy to do. But I do know at one time I just wanted to make enough to pay my bills. ... I did better than I thought I was going to do.”
